Smelly Urine in Male – Reasons for Smelly Urine in Males

Smelly urine in male can be caused by a number of things. Most commonly, the urine of any individual smells stronger in the mornings. However, a smelly urine in male that is abnormally scented is most commonly something the male consumed and ingested.

Abnormally smelly urine indicates a problem that should be checked by a physician. The most common problem associated with smelly urine in males is a urinary tract infection. A urinary tract infection is when bacteria enters the bladder, urethra, and even kidneys. A person can get a urinary tract infection from stress, weakened immune system, or having sex with an infected person.

The urinary tract infection causes a foul smelling urine. Another highly likely cause of  urine smell is dehydration. When the body sweats, it loses water and electrolytes. This combined with not enough adequate water or liquid intake into the body will cause a loss of water and thus a more concentrated wee that smells more of ammonia than normal.

Sweet smelling urine is commonly associated with a metabolic disorder. Usually, a diabetic will, at some point, especially when their sugar levels are high, have a sweet smell to their pee caused by sugar seeping into the urine.

There is also a condition called MSUD, or Maple Syrup Urinary Disorder, some people suffer from. This metabolic disorder can can also cause smelly urine where it smells like the name suggests, maple syrup.

Anything ingested into the body, such as vitamins, medications and any type of food could possibly cause a smell in a persons pee. Eating asparagus can cause smelly urine in males. Usually after eating asparagus the urine will smell like rotted cabbage, garbage, rotting eggs, or ammonia Asparagus, however, is not the only food that may cause the urine to stink.

Other causes can be liver failure or kidney stones, or certain medications. A musty smelling urine is usually associated with liver disease. Certain vitamins may also cause urine to smell abnormally. Any male who has noticed a change in the way his urine smells should see a physician and submit a urine sample to rule out any infections and find out exactly what is causing the smell. Usually if the urine sample does not indicate a disease or disorder then it is most likely due to a food one has consumed or a medication that one has ingested.
